Today I made some significant progress with the work that I was doing, as a result I was looking to have some calls raised in our new shiny call management system. The old system had finally been turned off at the end of last week and the last of the data from it was migrated into the new system, I was some what surprised to find that all was not as it should be. Actually that’s not true, I wasn’t particularly surprised that all had not quite gone to plan – in fact it looks like a pretty serious cockup.
I was however surprised to see that some of the systems admins who had left or retired had returned and that the old offices that were vacated some months ago were back in service, a little thought about the work that they must have done has led me to the following conclusion. They must have just migrated everything into the new system, which means that the person that did the work has the planning aptitude and the leadership qualities of The Great Gonzo!
With his team of highly skilled and motivated personel there was no other choice of person that could do the job, it’s a well known fact that he does the work of two people Laurel and Hardy. Except at the weekend when he works for time and a half thus doing the work of three people – Curly, Larry and Moe.
In addition I had sent out some links to the systems admins at an other location in the company, these links were to data editing, reporting and deletion pages on a live database. The request not to change any of the live data of course went completely unheeded, I now will have to reload the data and ensure that it is consistent with the systems. As with all of these things I should know better, after each of these type of things I have thought that I deserved the Sombrero to be awarded to me for stupidity but it’s just me giving these people the benefit of the doubt.
I don’t mind having to work with people who are not hugely gifted intellect wise, I’d just like it if once in a while I was pleasantly surprised – but in reality I’d probably miss the signal to run out and buy the winning lottery ticket. Still when I get some spare time I’ll make an Idiot Seeking Sombrero and launch it, I just have to overcome the problem of it flying all over the place and getting confused!
