Well it had to happen – the old systems had to start getting removed from the computer room, where better to start than with the biggest heater. This is a picture of the F-12K leaving, the system provided reliable service for a number of years – and provided the computer room with much of it’s heat. I’m not sute of the weight of the system but it’s likely to be in the region of 1000Kgs. Hence the large forklift truck that was required to take it out of the office – via the first floor windows. This was one end of the migration trail, the other was our new F-15K the migration and with no changes to the Operating Sytem, Applications or any thing else it only took three and a half years and the budget was only 1.8 Million Pounds – how good was that then!
But now the time has come for the system to be scrapped, as the picture was taken just over a week ago I fully expect that there will be nothing left thay is any bigger tha a 10p piece. Pity really as the system did a very good job for a number of years, providing almost all the main business requirements for a long time. Now we are in the process of replacing all the systems in the business with the new Sun ‘T’ and ‘M’ series servers although this time there’s an OS upgrade and several applications upgrades to deal with, the time scales have been greatly reduced and the projected completion date is before the end of this year.
So probably before the end of the year we’ll see the F-15K go the same way, possibly sooner as the whole thing could be migrated to the new boxes much sooner if things run smoothly.
