Well it’s 10:15 on a Friday night and the Bank Holiday Weekend is upon us, a perfect opportunity for a systems admin to get going with all the stuff that hasn’t been looked at for a while. We have a lot of work planned for the weekend as we have the extra day where the systems won’t be used, so it’s a major push for me and the rest of the Muppet’s.

All is ready, the document that we are using for the upgrade is bigger than the manual for the product (Oracle) weighing in at a hefty one hundred and four pages the last time that I looked at it. Every body who is involved is hyped up and ready, the project manager is keen for it to go well but not sure that it will. For my part I’ll be in the office, but I am planning to do other stuff related to the non existent security that we have – I’ll be trying to put some in place.

I’m about as ready as I can be with the security stuff, I’ve gone cross eyed while creating the Korn Shell Scripts. Also I’ve spent the last three month chasing the goal posts around the pitch, but at long last I’m ready (with the exception of one script) to deploy and activate the code. When you have systems where there as 12-15000 Unixuser accounts, the security should be very tight.  But as any systems admin will tell you, It’s much more fun chewing your arms off! Unfortunately the auditors don’t seem to share this sentiment and want to see some ticks in boxes. A sentiment that is echoed by some of the management, although there seems to be a certain lack of understanding when it comes to the problems that implementing any degree of security will cause.

Still come tomorrow it’ll be a case of “kick the tyres and light the fires”, so I’ll probably be back here tomorrow night bumping my gums about some Muppet causing me some unforseen problem.
