Don’t think too baldly about me but after the past few days I know that Pepe escaped and wasn’t eaten, he sneaked ino the computer room at one of the sites and turned off an other one of the DNS servers. Now you might think that this is a trivial matter, however let me point out that when the backups stop working and a whole shed load of other things go wrong it’s not. It almost got to the point of booking one of the nice new dance studios for the systems admins to go and do the formation headless chicken dance. Fortunately we were able to contain the problems, mostly by telling lies to the users. And ignoring the problems that they were facing, because it was easy to tell them that the problems were related to the move to the new offices.
Now so as you don’t think too badly of me, let me explain that this is the way that most IT departments treat the users. Don’t think so, well have you ever watched an episode of the IT crowd. Most people think that it’s a fiction, well let me assure you that it’s about as close as you can possibly get to reality. The users are only interested in the users, the business is only interested in how it handles customers and the people in between are really only interested in going to the pub………….
As I said don’t think too badly of me, due to the way that life has changed I’m reduced to dealing with people who make “Forrest Gump” look like “Albert Einstien”. There is always space for the individual in the IT world, it’s a proven fact – however when the individual can be outsmarted by an un opened can of Pepsi then there might be cause to review that statement. It might be time to reconsider the options, whereas the average systems admin may want to give people the benefit of doubt. This is only usefull if the person that you are dealing with is more intelligent than a prawn, in reality it may be better to just cook them and pretend that you can’t tell the diffrence between them and the afore mentioned prawn.
It’s not that I look at these people as being stupid or anything like that, it’s just that they are stupid.
How on earth were we to know that Pepe would escape! After gaining his freedom Pepe had stumbled through the IT departments being shunned by sys-admins wherever he went. Eventually his path led him through into the shadows and he entered the underworld realms of the networks team. Armed only with an industrial strength pack of blu-tak and an unerring sense of “it’ll be OK” he set about decommissioning with a ferver for removing kit which would left the accountants in awe! To quote the aforementioned philosophical genius Forrest Gump “stupid is as stupid does.” (or should that be ………)
Okay – enough said. You’re right.
