Here we are with only three days left until we move office and there are still strange requests being made, the latest revolved around some servers at an other site. There was a flood of requests for information, what was happening with them, they’re critical and seem to have been over looked. The consensus was that they will have to be moved to the new office, where no servers are supposed to live – it’s an emergency so we can bypass process was the comment. Alas after a little research I had to burst the self important bubbles that these people had created for themselves by telling them that the business critical servers had been decommissioned some time ago and removed from site – still it gave me some thing to do for a few minutes.

As an aside for the past couple of days, we have had some consultants on site from one of the well known database vendors. Unfortunately one of them managed to disgrace himself by turning up in the pub wearing a pink shirt and requesting a glass of water with a slice of Lemon. What has the world come to when things like this can happen, not that long ago any one of the two would have lead to severe ridicule – however now it seems to be perfectly acceptable.

The final point of note today was the two hour training course that I went on, still not sure what it was for as the application looks to be verry simple and may even be functional – something which is in my experience unusual in IT. Still we can but wait and see how it all pans out, will everything work when we get to the new offices? Will there be coffee machines to calm the masses? Will people be able to find the new offices?

My final question is a simple one, eventually all the customer facing staff will be in one location. Will there be a suitable DR plan and if so will it be tested, I mean we will have all the people travelling to a fairly remote location, if there is a communications failure what will they do? Although a remote possibility it does have to be considered, I know that it’s unlikely but in the past single locations have proved to be unsuitable so why would things be any different now?
