The advanced guard started at the new offices today, all is sweetness and light at first – then as usual “the belt comes right off the boiler”. The problem was easily identified, it was obvious when all the screens blanked and the lights went out that there was a power shortage. Still you have to expect that there will be teething troubles with these things, as one of my colleagues said – “It’s an office in a Galaxy far far away!”. I’m sure that it won’t take long to sort it all out, as they often say in our company – “may the farce be with you”. The rebel alliace is fighting a losing battle against the dark side of management forces, but in the end they will have the satisfaction of saying “I told you so!”.
However when the bulk of the people get there they’ll have to have it all sorted out, as there can be only one outcome now. Years ago the management sold the jerseys and we don’t have anywhere else to go, the new offices are a technological marvel but no where near anything that could be useful – the bulk of people will have quite a lot of time added to the commute. As you would expect when we move to a Galaxy far away, but for some the commute will be the same or less.
There was also a presentation today on the new company structure, a model of tutonic efficiency if you ask me – 90% of the work is going to be done by some bloke who’s initials are “n n”. These things are easy to work out, especially when this person “n n” has lots of jobs in the new structure.
