After today there is a lot on, the situation is as follows. The bitching about the backups was taken on board and will probably lead to a total revamp of the backup system, so plus one there. There were questions asked about implementing remote working, well to retain the accreditation that the company has this won’t be possible. Simple really, we design and manufacture Smart Cards – chip and pin, NFC that sort of thing.
Checking the common criteria indicates that it should not be possible to see any of this data outside the perimeter, so a non starter there then. The best that could be hoped for is some kind of hybrid cloud, even that will only give minimal access as almost every thing that this outfit does is specifically design oriented – so can’t be viewable outside the secure area. So they will probably be left with what they already have, email – maybe some restricted access to some documentation. In reality the hoops that will have to be jumped through will probably mean that things are too difficult to make it worth while, we’ll just have to see what they decide.
Today the highlight was bringing some decommissioned systems back to life, a system from 1999 running Solaris 2.7 and one from 2001 running Solaris 2.8 – jeez I could hardly control my excitement. All because some of the design team forgot that they need specific license servers running, one of them hadn’t been used for more than three years and suddenly there was a desperate panic to have it up and running. So all in all just an other normal day in the Blind Asylum…..
