Nearly all stripped.
Nearly all stripped.

This what things used to look like in the old IT world, 256 physical disks and 9Tb of storage. Now I have nearly that much disk on my workstation, good old Moore’s Law in action. The technology available now is stunning, mobile phones that would out perform a mainframe from 30 years ago (well almost).

So how are things at the office then, well my colleague has gone – actually two weeks ago – from the first inkling that something was happening to him not being there was a whole 15 or 20 minutes. There was obviously some politics at play here, I had been aware of the uneasy relationship between him and the Europeans since I started as it was made very clear to me that I didn’t actually report to him. So two weeks ago, immediately after the move all came to a head and he resigned and was escorted of the premisses immediately. All I can add is that the reason that he gave me for his resignation was repudiated by HR almost immediately after he left, no elaboration – just the reason he gave wasn’t correct.

Anyway, anyone who knows me personally will know that I don’t do office politics – windups yes politics no (although it’s sometimes hard to differentiate) there have possibly been sombrero’s awarded for the former. So what’s the situation, well it’s a bit like the old emergency contracting again – although the rate is no where near as good as it was 20 years ago. In two weeks I’ve found out lots of stuff that I didn’t expect to have to find out. On Monday I have to decommission a switch, but am a bit shy on the skills for actually checking that it’s not being used. Still the old turn it off and if anyone screams turn it on again ploy will probably work, well mostly I hope – I haven’t done any IOS since around 2003.

What else to do I hear you ask, well the poopoo pixies have been, Netbackup was out for a couple of days – resolved on Friday. After I reported to Europe that the problem was visible, I was left to my own devices to fix it. Other than on Friday night there was a request for information regarding all the servers that were being backed up – where were the backups, well I guess that there is an other spread sheet about to be created. Still there’s no point in having a moan about this, although I’d love to see them try a DR – I bet they get the first 50% of it right.
