Well a year ago today I was moaning about a long day that I’d just had, things have changed quite a bit in the last year. We are well into the project, moving all the applications to our European Data Center. It’s been quite interesting, after the three and a half years moving from an F12K to an F15K – with no changes to the OS, Applications or Database. We’re here with an ambitious One Year to move every thing to Europe, with an OS change, some applications changes and some database changes.
Today started OK, I’ve calmed down after the incident last week. There has been an apology which has been accepted, there was only one proviso which was that to save any confusion should something similar happen again – ask me what I’m doing! So the incident is closed and hopefully we can just forget about the whole thing, possibly there was fault on all sides as I’ve become too comfortable in my position here. I couldn’t have assisted with the issues that the Operations Team were having last week, but perhaps I could have offered to help and it may have allowed an explanation.
Anyway all things seem to be sorted out now, the work that we have to do as a team will progress apace. The end result will probably be that all the applications will move to Europe on time and the project will complete almost to schedule, the people responsible for moving the applications will move on and the support will gradually move to Europe as the skill set in the UK diminishes.
Did I miss anything out, oh yes – a year ago I was rambling on about this and still am now. So whats changed, not very much really. I’m told that the software has just as many features, the developers and the support staff are just as demoralised and that it’s very unlikely that the system will work as it’s meant to for at least an other 18 months. Can I say that I’m surprised, not much chance of that I think. But when the management seem to be more optimistic than the staff, the end result is likely to be tears.
