Dressed for Maintenance.......

In the world of computer services provision, there is a definite them and us attitude apparent. I had thought that this wasn’t the way that things worked here, as up until now there didn’t seem to be any differentiation between permanent and contract staff. In respect of some members of the permanent staff that is obviously incorrect, it has caused me to fell a little aggrieved and somewhat disappointed. I will see what is to happen early next week when I have a chance to meet the person that instigated the chain of events that led up to this, apparently he doesn’t want to be seen as a grass!

There has as I’ve said been an incident which has caused to to become a little more detached and somewhat more objective in respect of this contract. I have been considering my position and the longevity of this contract, it is likely that without further incident I’ll complete the work. But the chances of me moving onto an other project are slim, so it is very likely that the contract will end early in 2012.

In truth I had in the past considered myself lucky to have worked with such a nice group of people for so long, the fact that they had asked me to become a permanent employee of the company did give a good feeling. Obviously recent events have dented that perception somewhat, but all in all I still consider myself to have been fortunate with this contract. It will be a case of moving back into the contract market and seeing what’s available, I know that the market isn’t what it used to be – but there are contracts to be had and I have recently had to do quite a lot of skills revision.

The next few weeks will have a significant amount of weekend working that will have to be done, this will lead up to the maintenance weekend in October when the clocks change. It seems that for the maintenance weekend all the staff that go into the office will be in fancy dress, something I don’t really have the shape for. Being a Scot I’d go as The Highlander, but would only end up looking like a Dalek in tartan. So unless compulsory it will probably be one that I’ll miss out on, although I could go dressed as Rambo – the temptation to take a demolition charge in with me might be too difficult to resist.

I guess I’ll just have to wait and see, but at the moment it just feels like it’s Not one for me!
