It’s a very true saying, “Never assume – it makes an “ass” out of “u” and “me”. Something that I was reminded of again today in pretty spectacular fashion, I had assumed that as all the systems at one site had been built from a central server they would all be built the same way. For that I award myself the “Dress Sombrero”, the problem it would seem is that the first server was built and then some changes were made. These changes were pushed out to the second server and then just for fun some other changes were made, these as it happens were pushed out to server number three and so it goes on.
As I had been tasked with creating a generic script to check the servers for compliance with the build documentation, I’m sure that you can see where I’m going with this……..
When I thought about it for a while I realised that the answer to my problem had in fact been postulated some time ago, by some very clever and witty man who’s name I cant remember. He said that if you sat an infinite number of chimps in front of an infinite number of typewriters, that you’d find the complete works of William Shakespear in the output. Well today I discovered that someone has started the project off and some of the output is in circulation, I also discovered that we use it as systems documentation for our main systems.
Has today been a good day, not really but it’s over now.
