Well I went into the office this morning, with a list of things to do and made quite a lot of headway. There are almost no staff in the building at weekends now, it’s quite strange with no one from Operations on the Ops bridge. There is of course the obligatory sleeping security guard, along with some of the business people but other than that the place is empty. The first part of the day flew in, then I decided I was in need of nourishment and a trip to Macdonalds was required (That may be an Oxymoron), so a double sausage and egg McMuffin was the order of the day OJ to drink (One of my Five a Day) with an extra Hash Brown for 30p.
First task of the day, checking for system problems had been completed before going out for breakfast. After returning to the office there were several additional tasks to tackle, these included running security sweeps and compliance checks on the systems. Most of the systems were just as they were a month ago, the last time I did this – not really a surprise if you ask me! The email from one of the main systems was there telling me that there are still 2000 accounts on the system that haven’t been used for more that four months, the Security team obviously think that it’s spam mail.
On Monday there will be some massive reports for the powers that be to have a (very cursory) look at, this is just so that some one can put a tick in a box and fill in some spread sheet. I keep checking the blog of an ex colleague at http://www.hcl3.net/blog and wish that it was me! Still I do buy my ticket for the lottery each week in the vain hope that I’ll be able to tell them all to bugger off some time soon.
There are only Seven days left until we move to our new office, there are all sorts of interesting things creeping out of the woodwork. There will be no eating at your desk, as a consequence there will be no SA’s available at lunch time. There is a dress code and I won’t be able to wear a skirt that’s above my knees – as a Scotsman this may be a problem! The car park has automatic number plate recognition to allow the vehicles in, you can register two cars – I actually have four cars in the family. So will be unable to use two of my cars, not really such a big problem but annoying none the less.
Still once we get to the new offices everything will be great, you won’t have to have any paperwork as there are no drawers and a clear desk policy. You won’t be able to work late, as there are no facilities within walking distance. If you want to work on, you’ll have to make do with a coffee from a vending machine. It’s a grand life as a Systems Administrator, especially when the Muppets are running the show!
