Why do I feel that my time in IT has been a waste of time.
I have had some time to evaluate the time that I spent working in IT – all 39 years of it, the conclusion that I have come to is that the name for the site was wildly optimistic. With a few exceptions, the people that I have worked for haven’t really understood very much about the IT function within a business and why looking after it is important.
That’s not to say that all the people that I worked for could be classed as Muppets, but there were certainly a goodly number that fitted into that category.
What about the people that I worked with, well for the most part it was the other way around – in fact most of these people were dedicated, more than competent, diligent and professional.
Time and time again I watched the IT teams that I worked with become demotivated and demoralised, usually courtesy of the management – who sad to say often lacked foresight and honesty. This deterioration of morale was usually down to the moments where “I told you so didn’t quite cut it!”, or the “We’ve always done it this way mentality”. The de-motivation was a natural consequence of the loss of morale, this seemed to be especially hard for management to grasp.
What now, well I probably won’t go back into IT – stacking supermarket shelves is more rewarding and picking Broccoli is more lucrative. So why on earth would I go back to shoveling crap for someone who actually doesn’t care, the whole Covid-19 experience has caused me to re-evaluate what I expect from a job. I certainly don’t want to go back into the grist mill of IT, unless there is a slim possibility of making a difference!
