Keeping the Systems Going!
Well an other day over in the world of the Muppet Systems Administrators, as I reflect on the day I wonder how things just keep getting better and better. We have hardware that’s more than fifteen years old running a critical application, there doesn’t seem to be any possibility of moving it to any other platform. The application will become surplus to requirements only when and if some of the other applications can be properly migrated to SAP, we all know how easy that can be with very complex systems. So I spent part of the afternoon down in the computer room trying to salvage spare parts for the system, this is in the vain hope that we can prolong the life of the system enough to bypass this problem. At least there was no requirement to interact with the users today, this is always a bonus when the users are only marginally more intelligent than a paper weight. Anyway as an aside I spoke to two Systems Administrators that I worked with in the past, one ( A Hunky Norwegian Sailor Type – well he thinks he is! ) is off to Brazil for a year – the lucky bastard! The other is going to Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Museum tomorrow as part of his six week tour of America, god how I wish it was me! Am I green with envy, too bloody right I am. The other thing that happened today was that the management meeting was in our office, they came from all over the country and are booked into an upmarket hotel. The meeting could have been done as a video conference but would probably have gone something like this http://www.youtube.com/v/tgbNymZ7vqY&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0 So it’s probably more cost effective for everyone to spend three days away from their desks for a two hour meeting.
