Look at the title of the post, does it say anything to you? If you work in I.T. it should, most places that I’ve worked seem to have a structure that echoes the post title. If you’ve actually worked somewhere that the person that is in charge is actually the person that is responsible, you’re probably in a minority. Still I’ve got a quite interesting issue at work and there seems to be a bit of politicking going on, here we have a site that has been considerably downsized and has a lot of spare equipment. The European bosses would like some of this equipment transported to their location, well nothing the matter with that I hear you say. And you’d be correct in that, except they don’t seem to be looking at the real cost.
It’s unlikely that they will be able to manage to move the equipment to Europe for much less than £70 per unit, these for the most part are non functioning units being short a hard drive at the very least. So the real cost is likely to be much higher, as the purchase cost of the drive will be in the order of £60 if sourced in the after market – higher if sourced from the vendor. So in my opinion the whole exercise is likely to be futile, where the final cost is likely to be in the order of £120 plus per unit.
So it looks like it could be just an other way to spend money that the company doesn't have. After all the reason for transporting the equipment across Europe would seem to be to put it into storage and to give the equipment in Europe to the staff. As they used to say in the days of the Empire, "damn cunning these orientals eh?"
Anyway, it would seem that I've been put in charge of pricing the relocation of the equipment to Europe, but then it would seem that Officer Crabtree is likely to be responsible for the debacle!
