Friday night and ready for the weekend, I think! So how was the week – well most of it was OK, the Europeans were over checking on progress. Although they were staying about an hours drive from the office, mostly because there was a desire to see an other part of the country – but partly because there is absolutely nothing to do close to the office. There was quite a lot of progress made in the scrapping equipment front, the Europeans were very impressed with the fact that I’d labelled the equipment that was ready to be decommissioned – possibly something that they don’t do in Europe. Anyway the end result of the week on that front is fairly impressive, most likely an other few hundred Kgs of rubbish thrown out. I’m looking at the thousands of backup tapes and the hundreds of hard drives that have to be degaussed, thinking how much progress that has been made on that front – and feeling quite smug about where we are.
As for the rest of the working week, well the multi-node cluster flung it’s legs in the air and landed on it’s ass. The most important things I learned were the things not to do, but I did eventually manage to resolve the issues – even although someone broke it even more while I was working on it (not me I hasten to add). But by the end of the day I’d learned quite a lot, so have a better understanding of how it all hangs together. But the learning curve was steep and probably a bit like Mountaineering in Flip Flops, not really for the faint hearted.
