I turned up in the office this morning to find everything dead, email, license servers the whole lot. So there have been a few people here to see me so far, first step was to contact the data centre – only to find out that they were performing the European version of the formation headless chicken dance.
After running a few checks it was patently obvious that almost everything was dead and as I couldn’t even ping remote servers – likely to stay so for some time. But in the past two hours services have started to return, this however has highlighted some issues. Some people have email and others don’t, some people have web access (like me) and other people don’t. So in the interests of getting things back up and running locally I’m going to wait for direction from Europe.
I must admit that this wouldn’t have been much of a problem normally, there are three members of the team – but one is on holiday and the other is sick (conveniently) especially as he was on call when all the servers went down at 02:00. Its now 10:15 and I’m on my fourth cup of coffee, there have been a stream of users at the door (they obviously don’t talk to each other either) – and if one more person comes to the door to find out whey the servers in Europe broke after being moved to the new office.
I’m going to get my cheese grater and lemon juice from the car, it wont fix the systems any faster – but I’ll feel much better.
