Some time next week I should have an interview in Glasgow for a position as a Unix SA, the job seems to be pretty straight forward. Although there may be a bit of politics involved, as I’ve been told that the report line is direct to the French management. Where at the moment the existing infrastructure team is local and is very small, in the medium term they will continue – but that will only be until the equipment is relocated or decommissioned. And from what I gathered during the interview they will be providing a support function, while I actually shut the equipment down and remove it.
Still this is a new challenge and I’m actually looking forward to it, I have looked at some of the things that were mentioned in the interview. But for the most part I’ve covered these things before, the versions of the operating systems are pretty old. The backup software is Netbackup, the same as when I left in 2001. It seems that the old “Don’t fix it if it isn’t broke.” rule is still being used in a lot of places, so as much of the stuff is likely to still be in place I’m looking forward to seeing it.
During the course of the day, I’ve been wondering if any of the people that will be there are the same ones that were there 14 years ago. Which was when I last worked there, or if all the faces have changed. So you’ll just have to watch this space to see how I get on, at least I know my way there for the first day and car parking shouldn’t be much of a problem.
