Well it’s the first post of 2013, despite the Mayan calendar getting to the end of time we’re all still here I see. Was a little hopeful on this particular end of the world theory, it would have saved me from making a decision about the contract renewal. Anyway as is obvious to most people the world didn’t end on the 21st of December, I say most people as there are some that I work with who are probably not sure on that one!
So how did my first day back in the office go, well myself and a colleague spent a fair chunk of the morning trying to sort out my desktop. The end of the morning saw me with my password aligned on all systems and a nearly working desktop system, that last bit was mostly thanks to the colleague who is much more proficient with Windows than I’ll ever be. Anyway, it was the upward and onward (or maybe onward and downward) moment for the day.
The remainder of the day saw me catch up with some emails and a conference call, then by jingo it was time to go home. So the sum total for the day was four or five password changes, add a column to a spread sheet, read and reply to some emails, join a conference call and go home. In truth this was all probably about an hour and a half’s work, with an hour of it being the call – all in all one of my more productive days.
Over the past three months it’s become obvious that there are three “doers” in the team, the rest it would seem are the thinkers. Although what they are thinking about I have no bloody idea, but the team ratio of thinkers to doers would still seem to be about 10:3. If this is carried across the full project stream in the office, then there would be around 300 thinkers and 90 doers at a guess – which when all things are considered is pretty amazing.
Still I didn’t bugger anything up, or kill anyone – so I guess that today should be considered a success. I still have three weeks on the contract decision and am leaning towards the take the money and run option, well at the moment anyway.
