Why do this the simple way?

Well there has just been a weekend practice of the major migration that is going to be done at the beginning of April, did it run smoothly – well actually it did. Which I should point out came a s quite a surprise, not least it would appear to the people who were in charge of it! Now as anyone who knows me will know, I’m quite happy to tackle any work that I’ve been given and some times actually manage to achieve some results. Not because I’m better than anyone else, although I’m starting to think about changing my position on that statement. But because I’m prepared to consider all alternatives and quite happy to spend a little bit of time to identify what is the best tool for the job, I sometimes find some simple quick gains.

To put this job in perspective, we are running a like for like migration – right down to the replication of decade old equipment at a new location. The newest software is Windows 2003, is that meant to be a clue I hear you say – not really it’s just a statement of fact. The next three months will see a further six practice weekends, each one will hone the team into a more precise instrument so that on the actual cut over weekend we’ll only have to call for help in the most dire circumstances.

But when it all does go wrong and the call is placed, I know that the theme tune from 633 Squadron and the sound of the mosquito with it’s twin RR Merlins will be heard – but as the air support flashes over the crest of the ridge. It will be so obvious that the pilot of the rescue team will be “The Great Gonzo” closely followed by “Fozzy Bear”, will I be disheartened? Not any more than I already am!
