This is probably the most frightening question that a systems administrator can be asked, the user will nonchelantly approach with a disarming smile and tell you that they have a simple problem.

This won’t be a problem like I’ve locked my account, these users will approach with a sheepish grin and be quite deferential. Oh no this will be the question like, when I am using vi to write “c” code it will only accept 31 characters as a class handle and can you look into it.

Instead of doing the decent thing and killing the user, you look at them and take pity on then – thinking that this will be a nice simple fix probably and you’ve got a little time to sort it out.  After a significant amount of research and visiting several utterly banal web sites, the realisation that you’ll have to recompile vi in 64bit mode and deploy it on over 300 servers with 5 different flavours of unix will cause you some angst.

After some reflection you’ll decide that a much simpler solution is to takeup your baseball bat from beneath your desk and head for the users desk with murderous intent, although this can be frowned upon in some commercial circles – what with corporate liability and that sort of thing.
